How to Make a Homemade Greeting Card -- It's Easy!
The typical greeting card measures 51/2" X 41/4" and consists of several layers of card stock and printed scrapbook paper. After assembling your card, embellishments are added to the front of the card. I like to jazz up the inside of my cards with more than a sentiment. I layer different papers and add embellishments to the inside too. Find the steps below to create a simple greeting card that you'll be proud to send.
Every card maker creates their own masterpiece. There is no right or wrong. Just wonderful creativity!
SUPPLIES
Most supplies can be purchased at any hobby or craft store. JoAnns, Michaels, or Hobby Lobby are retail store that carry most supplies. Using the internet is also a popular way to purchase supplies. My site sells digital stamps that can be used in card making, scrapbooking and with any craft project.
SUPPLY LIST
1. Card Stock for card base; 8.5 x 11 paper, 70 or 80 lb. weight.
2. Colored card stock, 8.5 x 11 or 12 x 12
3. Double sided tape
4. Glue
5. Digital or Rubber stamp for picture or sentiment.
6. Embellishments; choose one or more to add to your card: stickers, clip-art, ribbon, words, buttons, gems, glitter, brads, flowers, cut-out pieces from old cards or anything you want!
7. Optional: Pop Dots for 3-D effect.
MAKING YOUR CARD
1. Cut a piece of card-stock 51/2 x 11". (Hint: Cut a sheet of 81/2" x 11 card-stock in half) Fold the cut card in half or score the card lengthwise at 41/4".
2. Layer different card-stock colors and patterned paper on the front of your card. Optional: also to the inside of your card. Cut each layer 1/4" smaller than the previous layer. In the picture above the white card base is 51/2 x 11" fold in half. The front of the card will be 5-1/2 x 4-1/4" The next layer is black and cut to 5-1/4 x 4". The third layer is a print of Happy Birthday Words and that paper was cut to 5 x 3-3/4".
3. Center each layer on top of the next. Use double-sided tape to adhere all layers.
4. Stamp or print a digital stamp and cut image out or cut paper with the image to a size that fits on the card. The card that's show in the picture has a ice cream cone that is a stampwithgail digital image. I printed the digi stamp, colored it, and cut out the image. If you choose not to cut out the image, cut the card-stock with the stamped image into a square or rectangle. The image will look more appealing layering various papers under the image, Cut each additional layers 1/4" larger than the previous. Then adhere down with glue or double sided tape. I like double sided tape. It's not as messy.
5. When adding ribbon, attach the ribbon around the card layers before adhering to the card base.
6. Add your embellishments to the front of the card.
7. Add a sentiment to the inside of your card.
8. Card fits an A2 size envelope.
9. When using Pop Dots on your card place a piece of card stock over the front of the card to keep the card from ripping when being run through the Postal Machine.
